An octopus possesses three hearts! Two branchial hearts pump blood through each of the two gills to collect oxygen, while the larger systemic heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout the rest of the body. Interestingly, the systemic heart stops beating whenever the octopus swims, explaining why they tire easily and prefer crawling along the sea floor.

Their blood is blue rather than red. While human blood relies on iron-based hemoglobin, octopuses use a copper-rich protein called hemocyanin, which is extraordinarily efficient at transporting oxygen in freezing cold, low-oxygen deep-sea waters.

An octopus features nine brains. It has one central, donut-shaped brain between its eyes, while each of its eight arms contains an independent mini-brain (ganglion). Nearly two-thirds of an octopus's 500 million neurons are located directly inside its arms. This allows each arm to smell, taste, touch, and make autonomous motor decisions simultaneously!

In less than 0.3 seconds—faster than a human eye blink—an octopus can shift both its skin color and 3D physical texture. It can seamlessly imitate a jagged reef, sandy floor, or moving kelp. This magic is powered by specialized elastic skin cells called chromatophores, iridophores, and muscular protrusions named papillae that alter skin from smooth to bumpy rock instantly.

When cornered, an octopus releases a dense cloud of dark melanin ink. Far from being a simple smoke screen to blind the pursuer, this ink contains an organic compound called tyrosinase. This enzyme temporarily blinds and paralyzes the olfactory (smelling) receptors of predators like sharks, buying precious escape time.

An octopus has zero bones. The only rigid structure in its entire organism is a sharp, keratinous beak resembling a parrot's beak. Because of this extreme hydrostatic flexibility, if a hole is large enough for its tiny beak to pass through, its entire massive body can squeeze through behind it!

Despite their astounding intellect, octopuses live exceptionally brief lives—typically just 1 to 3 years. They are semelparous, meaning they reproduce only once before dying. Males perish within weeks of mating. Females guard their clutch of 50,000+ eggs tirelessly for up to 6 months without eating a single meal, succumbing to starvation right as the larvae hatch.
